Housebreaking

The success of house breaking depends on your quick response to the cue. If the puppy is successful again and again, he will soon begin to head for the spot when he feels the urge. Be sure to monitor your pup’s activities throughout the day. When the pup sniffs, walks around in circles and appears anxious, it’s your cue to head to the “spot with the puppy. As soon as your puppy wakes up, take the puppy out don’t bring it in until it goes to the bathroom. After every meal, take the puppy out, sometimes you have to stand there sometimes you have to walk them around once they go give them praise!!! Keep the puppy in the same room you are in so you can watch them at all times. Take puppy out every 30 minutes until you get it on a schedule. Use the same door to enter and exit.

If you can’t constantly supervise the puppy, put it in the crate when you are busy. Just don’t let it make a “mistake”. If the puppy must be left alone, place the crate in a restricted area, such as the kitchen or bathroom with a baby gate across the door, and leave the crate door open. Put some safe toys in the crate and leave just one patch of newspaper in one spot, you have taken charge. Another good alternative is to have a friend or neighbor take the dog outside to his spot while you’re at work. Then put the dog in the crate with a small treat and a couple of toys with the door latched. Puppies can remain in the crate for a few hours when you are first training them, but no longer. As soon as you return from work let the pup out right away. Usually I have found If you give the puppy the whole run of a crate he will pee in one end and sleep in the other. You need to be creative and use what ever you can to ensure the puppy only has the size of its body to lay in. Close off the rest of the pen until the training is done. As the puppy grows I give it more and more room.

Many people, because Toy breeds are so small, pick up the puppy and carry it to the designated spot. You should make the puppy walk on his own, as a big dog do. Constantly carrying him, doesn't make him go to the area on his own. The puppy need to walk to the designated area, on his own as puppy, exactly as expected as an adult. Remember to always use the same door, always walk to the same spot, and give the command "Go Pee" or "Hurry up". If you set the timer on the oven for every 1.5 hours, then pick your pup up, and carry him outside, what does that teach him? But if you hook a leash to his collar, and take him to the door, and lead him to the spot he has done it himself.
